So this guy escaped his enclosure over a year and a half ago and has been living in the cichlid bay sump, eating escaped crickets, moths, spiders, and fish that make their way through the filter and into the sump. No one has seen him in a year and a half, and he’s become sort of an urban legend in the store, except every once in a while they’d find his sheds and his poops between the sumps when they would do water tests and water changes. So I was showing the new girl what bay I was told he lived in, and warning her to be careful sticking her hand in there, though honestly we hadn’t actually seen him since he escaped. I opened the bay and looked down and he was right there in front of us. She wanted to catch him (she’s owned Tokays before so she knew what she was getting into) so I got her the gloves and let her try. First time we’ve seen this guy since he escaped, and we caught him! He looks to be in pretty good health, except he has a really fat head. He’s very upset being in a cage again. Since he’s not a baby and we have no health guarantee on him, he’ll be put up for adoption to anyone who wants him (adoption fees at our store are half price of what we sell them for, and the money goes to the rescue groups we’re partnered with rather than our store).
That is a tokay survivalist if I ever saw one! His head looks okay to me though, but you might want to get him checked anyway.
I don’t think living for a year and a half in a sump will do anyone much good. Dang what a trooper.
